Follow a Journey of Epic Proportions with the Dino Trail Guide

Get ready for dynamic discovery and tons (and we mean tons!) of hands-on fun with our new Dino Trail Guide. Explore and imagine what dinosaurs’ lives were like millions of years ago. Where did they live? What did they eat? And what makes these creatures so darn cool?

Through three fun-filled, self-guided treks, our new Dino Trail Guide will take you on a journey back in time. Roam with the Torosaurs in the lush groves of West Texas (nope, it wasn’t always a windy desert). Stand face to face (OK, more like face to feet) with the most infamous dinosaur himself, T. rex.  Brush up on your knowledge of fun dino facts—like why fossils wear jackets and how to tell how much a dino weighs just by its footprint! Plus, you can dig for a few bones on your own—just like Tony Fiorillo and his team at the Museum of Nature & Science’s Paleontology Lab do every day.

No matter which of our three treks you swoop or stomp down, the new Dino Trail Guide will bring you a larger-than-life experience that’s sure to be a roaring good time!

New! Enhance your dinosaur experience with your smartphone!

In addition to using our Dino Trail Guide during your visit to the dinosaurs in our museum, smartphone-users can access new information and content available only through your personal handheld.

Did you know you can use your mobile device to go beyond our printed Dino Trail Guide and access special content available only through your smartphone? Here’s how:

Getting Started

To get started, make sure your mobile device can read a QR code. That means you need to ensure you have a QR code reader on your phone.

If you don’t have one, or if you aren’t sure, simply follow the instructions below for your mobile device. After you have the reader installed, you will use it to basically “read” the QR code with the camera in your phone. The QR code is displayed throughout various stops and treks in our Dino Trail.

iPhone

  • Go to the Apple App store
  • Search for a QR Reader: NeoReader, Optiscan, and QuickMark are recommended by CNET
  • Download the app you select and install it
  • Then, use that App to view the QR code

Android

  • Go to the Android Market on your phone
  • Search for “Barcode Scanner”
  • Download the Barcode Scanner app and install it
  • Then, use Barcode Scanner to view the QR code

BlackBerry users have a few options:

QR Readers

  • BeeTagg QR reader is popular with some BlackBerry users. Download using your mobile device at get.beetagg.com/.

BlackBerry Messenger v5.0

  • BlackBerry Messenger v5.0 has a QR code reader built in (device camera is required).
  • Download v5.0 at the BlackBerry App World site at: appworld.blackberry.com/.
On the Home screen, or in the Instant Messaging folder, click the BlackBerry Messenger icon.
  • Press the Menu key > click Scan a Barcode > click Continue.
  • Hold your device so that all four corners of the barcode appear on your device screen. Continue to hold the device until you hear the success beep.

What is QR Code?

A QR code is a two-dimensional bar code created by 1994 by the Japanese company Denso-Wave. The "QR" is derived from "quick response," because the creator’s intent was for the code to be decoded – or understood – at high speed. The QR code reader software allows your mobile device to read the QR code, prompting the browser window to open in the correct online location.

You will find our Virtual Dino Trail Guide QR code to scan throughout our Dino Trail exhibits. You can also scan it here.

Don't have a Smartphone?

Although our Virtual Dino Trail Guide is best enjoyed on your Smartphone while you’re visiting the Museum and are able to interact with our onsite exhibits, you can also access the information from your home computer by clicking here.
